Dealing with Mental Health: Amid Today’s Social and Economic Pressures

As part of the S2C Program of YMCA Madagascar, our young leaders from Cohort IX of YMCA Ankerana had the honor of hosting Zoky Felana RAZAKAMAHEFA, their godmother, for an open and heartfelt discussion on “Dealing with Mental Health Amid Today’s Social and Economic Pressures.”

Why does mental health matter? Because it is essential to our overall well-being. Mental health affects how we think, feel, and act. It plays a key role in how we handle stress, connect with others, and make decisions in daily life.

During the session, participants were invited to choose a new name for themselves. Some embraced the opportunity, while others chose not to. The takeaway? Whatever we try to change about our identity, one truth remains: we are who we are, and that does not define our worth.

It was a space for honest conversations, where participants were gently guided to confront their feelings and explore habits that support mental well-being, such as:

  • Distancing ourselves from toxic people who bring negativity and prevent growth

  • Surrounding ourselves with positivity, and being with those who guide us toward a better path

Later, participants were encouraged to write down a moment when they deeply felt sadness. The simple act of writing it out reminded them: when you can name your feelings, you can begin to release them. Another powerful tool is talking, sharing your emotions with someone you trust.
But perhaps the most important reminder of all: “Time heals. Be patient with yourself.”
