Youth-Led Action to Protect the Sokake, a Living Heritage at Risk

In the spiny forests of Southwest Madagascar, the Sokake (radiated tortoise) is more than wildlife, it is a living symbol of cultural identity, deeply rooted in ancestral traditions. Protecting it means preserving both biodiversity and heritage.

To mark World Turtle Day 2026, our young Green Ambassadors stepped up, taking action to address the growing threat of extinction facing land tortoises. On May 22, 2026, at the “Village des Tortues” in Mangily, Toliara, these young leaders led a community awareness session focused on a critical issue: the survival of a species now severely threatened in Madagascar.

Through interactive and accessible discussions, complex environmental issues were translated into real-life understanding. As a result, 54 community members were directly engaged, reflecting a growing local commitment to conservation.

The session highlighted the essential ecological role of tortoises while confronting the real threats they face: bushfires, illegal trafficking, and habitat loss. More importantly, it triggered a collective realization, protecting the Sokake is a shared responsibility.

But beyond raising awareness, the initiative aimed to drive behavioral change. By promoting simple and actionable practices, these young leaders helped shift community perceptions, laying the foundation for long-term biodiversity protection. They stood up for the radiated tortoise, one of Madagascar’s most valuable natural treasures.

Above all, this mobilization did more than inform, it connected, engaged, and inspired collective action. Because safeguarding the Sokake today means protecting Madagascar’s future.
