For families living in vulnerable situations, the start of the school year means more than simply going back to school. It can also mean difficult expenses to cover, as school supplies add to the household’s everyday costs.
For the young single mothers of the Fandresena network, supported by YMCA Madagascar in Antsirabe, this period can add to the financial pressure they already face. Access to school supplies therefore becomes a concrete issue in helping their children start the school year in better conditions.
To help ease some of these costs, YMCA Madagascar provided school kits this month to the children of these young single mothers, helping them start the school year with essential school supplies such as school bags, notebooks, pens, pencils, and rulers, as well as trousers and other items needed for the school year.
Beyond the materials provided, this support has contributed changes for these young people:
Reduced financial pressure on families: by covering part of the school supplies needed at the beginning of the school year, the support helps mothers reduce education-related expenses and keep part of their limited resources for other essential household needs.
More equitable conditions for children: having the basic supplies they need enables children to participate in school activities under better conditions and helps reduce some of the material disparities between students.
Fewer material barriers to education: by making essential school supplies more accessible at the start of the school year, the intervention helps reduce one of the practical barriers that families may face and supports children’s attendance and participation in school.
Support for mothers in their parenting role: beyond the material assistance, this initiative provides practical support to young mothers in meeting their children’s education-related needs and in managing the costs of the school year
For these young mothers, supporting their children’s education also means investing in their future. By easing some of the costs of going back to school, YMCA Madagascar helps families start the new school year with less financial pressure and gives children better conditions to continue their education.
