Planting for Tomorrow: Mangrove and Cactus Reforestation by YMCA Toliara

As part of its commitment to environmental protection and sustainable development, YMCA Toliara recently led two major reforestation initiatives during the month of April, mobilizing its members around concrete actions in support of nature and local communities.

Mangrove Reforestation in Akiembe Ankalika

On Friday, April 11, 2025, the members of YMCA Toliara gathered in the Fokontany of Akiembe Ankalika for a mangrove reforestation . This activity aimed to restore coastal ecosystems, prevent marine erosion, and strengthen the environmental resilience of the region. During the initiative, 800 mangrove propagules were planted across 1 hectare of coastal area.

This activity was designed and implemented by the members themselves as a hands-on follow-up to a training session on the Logical Framework Approach. It served as a powerful example of how young people can apply theoretical knowledge to real-world action.

Cactus Reforestation at Village Tortue, Mangily

Following this impactful effort, on Sunday, April 27, 2025, YMCA Toliara launched a second reforestation activity, this time in Village Tortue, Mangily. Members planted 500 cactus plants across 0.5 hectares of land to help protect local biodiversity and contribute to the conservation of native species.

These two initiatives reflect the energy, solidarity, and environmental commitment of YMCA Toliara’s youth members. Through such actions, they demonstrate their desire to be active changemakers within their communities.

YMCA Toliara invites all young people eager to take part in meaningful community development and environmental protection projects to join the YMCA movement . Together, we can build a greener, more united future!
