DIR Project: Empowering Former Inmates Through Street Food Skills in Moramanga

What if social reintegration could begin behind a small food counter? With simple recipes, practical tools, and step-by-step guidance, YMCA Moramanga empowered a group of former inmates to rebuild both their confidence and their future.

As part of the DIR project, a one-day training took place at the at the YPS Moramanga, bringing together seven former inmates. The main goal was to provide them with practical skills in street food catering and help them take the first step toward economic and social reintegration.

Training Objectives:

  • To offer a chance for professional reintegration through an income-generating activity.
  • To introduce basic catering management and culinary techniques suitable for small food businesses.

The session was led by an experienced trainer. It combined short theory sessions with hands-on demonstrations, role-playing exercises, and experience sharing. This dynamic approach made the training more engaging and easier to apply in real life.

For many, this training was more than just a learning opportunity. It marked the beginning of a personal transformation. They didn’t just gain new skills, they started to reclaim their sense of dignity and hope.

By the end of the day, each participant left with clear, actionable knowledge in stock management, pricing, hygiene, and basic sales. Several of them expressed a strong desire to launch their own food business. They are now better equipped to take confident steps toward financial independence.
