Cyclone Faida Hits Madagascar: YMCA Mobilizes for Disaster Preparedness and Response in Moramanga

Tropical Cyclone Faida has been strengthening over the Indian Ocean for the past few days, and its trajectory has been closely monitored. Over the weekend, it was officially classified as a tropical cyclone, with projections indicating landfall on Madagascar’s east coast today. As of 9 AM, Faida was approximately 40 km from Tamatave (Toamasina). Although it is expected to weaken upon reaching the mainland, the storm continues to bring strong winds and heavy rainfall, significantly increasing the risks of flooding and landslides.

Disaster Preparedness and YMCA’s Role in Moramanga

Given Madagascar’s exposure to tropical cyclones, proactive disaster preparedness is essential. The Alaotra Mangoro region has been under Yellow Alert since yesterday, prompting local organizations to take precautionary measures. As a result, YMCA Madagascar immediately mobilized its teams, including staff, young volunteers, and the Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) committee, to support affected communities.

To mitigate the impact of the cyclone, YMCA has undertaken  community awareness campaigns to inform people about safety measures and emergency response protocols.

 Community Awareness and Information Dissemination

  • YMCA teams have worked tirelessly to educate local residents on storm preparedness and evacuation procedures.
  • In collaboration with local authorities, volunteers have been using door-to-door visits, and social media to share timely updates.

 Post-Cyclone Damage Assessment and Recovery

  • Once the cyclone subsides, YMCA Madagascar will conduct damage assessments to evaluate community needs.
  • Future disaster preparedness strategies will be refined based on these findings to enhance resilience against similar events.
