Building Financial Resilience among Young Single Mothers

In a context where many young single mothers face significant economic pressure, financial management is more than just a skill, it is a key condition for achieving stability, autonomy, and decision-making power.

Within this framework, FANDRESENA—the network of young single mothers supported by the Fanantenana project—gathered for a financial management sharing session.

However, this gathering was not simly intended to deliver theoretical knowledge. Its primary goal was to drive a tangible shift in how these young women perceive and manage their financial resources on a daily basis.

Throughout the session, participants were guided to:

  • examine their financial habits
  • identify non-priority expenses
  • better organize their income, even when limited
  • recognize the role of saving as a safety net
  • distinguish between assets and liabilities in practical terms

These elements were directly linked to their lived realities, making the learning process both accessible and actionable.

The participatory approach was central to the session’s impact. Personal challenges, often experienced in isolation, were transformed into shared learning moments. Several participants realized that financial difficulties were not only a matter of limited income, but also of lacking effective management strategies.

For some, this session marked a first step toward stronger financial discipline. For others, it opened the door to exploring income-generating activities as a pathway to reduced economic dependency.

The most significant outcome lies in the shift in perception. Participants no longer see themselves only as facing diffculties, but as individuals able of progressively improving their situation.

In an environment where daily urgency often drives short-term decision-making, this activity introduced a new mindset—one focused on anticipation, organization, and future planning. Beyond a simple training session, this initiative contributes to building a space for solidarity, mutual learning, and accountability. Each participant becomes not only a beneficiary, but also an active agent of her own transformation.
