Raising Awareness on Gender-Based Violence Among Young Vulnerable Entrepreneurs

Gender-Based Violence remains a complex and sensitive issue, particularly for young people facing economic vulnerability while building their entrepreneurial paths.
To address this reality, thirty-three young vulnerable entrepreneurs from the RISE project participated in a workshop on GBV at YMCA Antsirabe. Although often approached with discomfort, GBV is deeply embedded in the social, economic, and professional realities of young people in Madagascar.

Organized in partnership with the DRPS and BFP Antsirabe, the session was designed to move beyond definitions. The objective was clear: to strengthen understanding of GBV, highlight its concrete impacts, and equip young entrepreneurs with the awareness needed to prevent violence; not only in private spaces, but also within workplaces and business environments.

Throughout the session, open and facilitated discussions encouraged active participation. Common assumptions were questioned, and new perspectives emerged. Participants explored how GBV intersects with economic vulnerability, power imbalances, and unequal access to opportunities. For many, it was the first time violence was discussed as more than a domestic or social issue. It was also recognized as a factor that influences professional environments, decision-making, and entrepreneurial growth.

As discussions deepened, so did the questions: How can victims be supported responsibly? What legal frameworks are in place? What role should witnesses play? And most importantly, what responsibilities do employers and business leaders have in creating safe and respectful workspaces?

One participant captured the spirit of the day:

“The fight against violence is not only a women’s issue. It’s a collective responsibility that starts with our own attitudes.”

This workshop showed that when awareness is rooted in lived experiences, it becomes a powerful driver of change. For these young entrepreneurs, access to open and informed dialogue is not only informative, it is empowering. By strengthening their understanding and sense of responsibility, YMCA Madagascar continues to support emerging entrepreneurs who are better equipped to build inclusive, respectful, and resilient economic spaces across Madagascar.
