After completing a theoretical training on nursery management, the young members of YMCA Moramanga recently moved from theory to practice by applying their knowledge in a field activity at Befotsy, Moramanga, under the guidance of their trainer.
This hands-on session was designed to help these young people put their nursery knowledge into practice, promote environmental protection through sustainable plant care, and foster ecological as well as community responsibility.
During the session, they practiced all the key steps of nursery management, including:
Soil preparation and seed selection.
Bagging, watering, and plant monitoring.
Understanding sustainable planning and crop management.
The group worked with different types of seeds and plants, each offering its own lesson:
Watermelon: planted in small holes with careful spacing to avoid competition.
Coffee: planted with a focus on its slow germination (3–4 months) and the constant care it requires.
Eucalyptus: planted in 50 nursery bags, showcasing its economic and medicinal value for future community projects.
This activity perfectly illustrates the principle of “learning by doing”: these young people discovered the importance of plants for food, health, and the economy, while strengthening their commitment to environmental protection.
An experience that nurtures not only the plants… but especially their skills.
