Capacity Building on Disaster Risk Management with Adapt40

Ahead of the cyclone season, YMCA Madagascar took steps to strengthen the skills of its staff and young members from different local branches in Disaster Risk Management, in partnership with Adapt40. This initiative aims to help everyone be better prepared for climate hazards and emergency situations.

The first training session focused on the Risk and Vulnerability Analysis (RVA), a key tool for better understanding the interaction between natural events and social challenges. It also guides participants in finding ways to reduce social and economic impacts while building stronger and more resilient systems. During the session, participants were able to:

  • Learn what hazards are, where they come from, and their possible consequences;

  • See the connection between hazards, stakes, and risks;

  • Understand the purpose and steps of RVA;

  • Identify and apply the most effective approaches for conducting analyses;

  • Create an impact chain to anticipate and mitigate potential disaster effects.

Beyond the technical skills, the training served as a valuable space for sharing experiences and discussing real-life challenges specific to Madagascar, building on YMCA’s hands-on experience in disaster risk management. This session was an important step in helping staff and youth become more resilient, more aware of risks, and better equipped to respond effectively when emergencies occur.
